Back of Book:

Anything Billie Jean did, she did it ALL THE WAY. When she ran, she ran fast. When she played, she played hard. As a top women’s tennis player, Billie Jean fought for fairness in women’s sports, and when she faced off against Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes, the most famous tennis match in history, she showed the world that men and women–and boys and girls–are equal on and off the court.

My Review:

I received a copy of this picture book from Penguin Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Mara Rockliff has delivered another inspirational story. Before reading this story, I didn’t know very much about Billie Jean. I was quickly transported into the story of her life from childhood to her rise as a great tennis player. Billie Jean did not care about what others thought of her. She was there to play tennis. The more matches she won, the more attention she received. Her famous match with Bobby Riggs during The Battle of the Sexes allowed her to show women of all ages that they are capable of greatness. The text in this story is well researched and written. I loved learning about such a strong woman to strived to be the best on and off the court. The illustrations by Elizabeth Baddeley are vibrant and rich in emotion. Mara wrote an in-depth note in the back of the book that shares more Billie Jeans life and career.

This is a great story for National Women’s Month or any sports unit.
