Back of Book:
From the wheels of a bicycle to the robe on Thurgood Marshall’s back, Black surrounds our lives. It is a color to simply describe some of our favorite things, but it also evokes a deeper sentiment about the incredible people who helped change the world and a community that continues to grow and thrive.
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from Roaring Brook Press in exchange for an honest review.
Angela Joy took on the concept of color and identity in a gentle but powerful way. The story follows a young girl as she contemplates the idea of what it means to be black. The lyrical text captures the essence of the history, culture, and movement that involves the color black. Angela included prominent symbols as well as people to show the impact of the black community. The illustrations by Ekua Holmes are filled with vibrant colors that match the expressive descriptions in the text. The back matter makes this book extra special. Angela included historical notes, poetry, as well as a musical playlist. I look forward to sharing this book with my students during Black History Month. It is a perfect own voice to add to any classroom or school library.
