I was so excited to read and review another story by Christy Mihaly. My students always learn something from her books. Free for You and Me: What Our First Amendment Means is an excellent introduction for younger readers on the importance and aspects of what the First Amendment is, and what it protects. The book begins by discussing the history of America and how the Constitution was written to protect Americans’ rights. The book discusses how The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. The text in a rhyming scheme and allows readers to easily understand the First Amendment. Manu Montoya captured both the historical and school room illustrations with bright colors and fun details. The classroom is made up of a diverse group of children and allows readers to see themselves within the pages. The back of the book shares more information about the First Amendment as well as a glossary of the definitions used throughout the story. This is a fantastic story use for civics or social studies units.
