I remember seeing fireflies for the first time on a trip to Wisconsin. I was memorized by the beauty of the simple glow. Fly Firefly is a delightful story based on writing by Rachel Carson. Author Shana Keller took this concept and created a stunning lyrical story about the journey of a firefly. The text follows the firefly as it tries to find its way back to its family. A little girl and her aunt find the firefly and help it get back to the sky. The illustrations by Ramona Kaulitzki are whimsical and beautifully I was in awe of the underwater and sky illustrations. The back of the book has more information about Rachel Carson and fireflies. This is an excellent story to discuss science and insects. It is also a perfect look at the importance of treating all creatures big and small with kindness and respect. This story has so many amazing themes and concepts that can be discussed and shared in classrooms or at home. I am so excited to share it with my students.
