Back of Book:
Papi is a bricklayer, and he works hard every day to help build the city, brick by brick. His son, Luis, works hard too–in school, book by book. Papi climbs scaffolds, makes mortar, and shovels sand. Luis climbs on the playground and molds clay into tiny bricks to make buildings, just like Papi. Together, they dream big about their future as they work to make those dreams come true. And then one Saturday, Papi surprises Luis with something special he’s built for their family, brick by brick.
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from Nancy Paulsen Books in exchange for an honest review.
This enduring picture book follows a young boy and his father as they strive to work hard. Papi is a bricklayer and builds the city brick by brick Luis attends school every day learning from books and dreaming of a better future. One day Papi surprises Luis with a home of their own built brick by brick. Written from Luis’s perspective, this bilingual picture book will show readers the importance of hard work and family. The text is rich in figurate language and paints a lyrical aspect of the story. The illustrations are done in a collage style and add texture and depth to the story. The colors are rich and show readers the similarities and differences between Luis and his Papi. This beautiful picture book should not be missed.
