I received a copy of this picture book from Pelican Books Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Debut author Carolyn Leiloglou wrote a story that celebrates the joy of the library. The story follows a young girl named Libby whose dream is to be a librarian just like her aunt Nora. When she is given the important task of being deputy librarian she takes it seriously and works hard to protect the books. When she realizes that the children in the library are abusing the books, she comes up with an idea to protect the library. It takes Libby learning the true job of a librarian for her to realize how she can fix her mistakes and bring readers back to the library.
Libby reminds me so much of myself when I was younger. I was constantly trying to encourage others to treat books with respect. It is a lesson that I still use in my classroom every year. I’m excited to use this story to lead my discussion this year about the importance of treating all books with respect. I love that Carolyn also shows readers all the ways that libraries can help children find the perfect book. The text is filled with cowboy slang and
The illustrations by Sarah Pogue are warm and invite readers into the story. My favorite illustrations are on the wanted posters.
This book is a perfect read-aloud that will be enjoyed by readers at home or in the classroom.
