Summer is always a time of beach trips and fun in the sand and sea “How to Meet a Mermaid” captures the magic of hunting for mermaids and making wishes come true. Once in every hundred years, the mermaids come to shore, and the children all rush to see if they can catch the magical creatures. They create a beautiful crown for her and she grants their wish to become part kid part fish. Together the children and the mermaid go on a grand underwater adventure filled with music and laughter. The lyrical text draws readers into the lore of mermaids and their magical powers. The illustrations by Simona Sanfilippo are playful and bright. I especially loved the underwater scenes. The back of the book has more information about mermaids and instructions on how readers can make their own mermaid crowns.
I am a huge fan of this series and look forward to sharing this with my summer program students.
