I received a copy of this picture book of Clarion Books in exchange for an honest review.
I am not sure what this upcoming school year will look like but I am looking forward to sharing this book with my students. “Speak Up” follows a group of students as they encounter several different ways in which they have the opportunity to stand up for what they believe in. Miranda Paul weaved valuable messages into the pages such as the importance of name pronunciation, including all children, and speaking up in difficult situations. The phrase “Speak Up” is repeated throughout the text showing readers that they are not too young to make a difference. The illustrations by Ebony Glenn showcased many different children with diverse cultures and abilities. Each page allows readers to recognize the importance of kindness and inclusion. The back of the book gives readers real examples of children who were brave along with examples of when it is important to speak up. This is a lovely story and one that should be in every classroom!
