Back of Book:
It looks like a wet and dreary day for Bear and his trio of friends. How could he possibly have fun when he is soaked? But Badger, Rabbit, and Moose don’t seem to mind. In fact, Moose can still hula hoop! And it looks like so much fun. Might Bear like to try?
Here is a story that shows that fun is not dependent on sunshine and blue skies. In fact, it might be more fun to be soaked!
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from author Abi Cushman in exchange for an honest review.
“Soaked” is an excellent read-aloud for our current situation. The story follows a badger, bunny, Hula-Hooping moose, and a very grumpy bear who are all caught in a rain shower. Bear is partially unhappy with the weather and cannot imagine anyone having fun in the rain. When Bear decides to try out Moses’s hula hoop, he realizes that maybe playing in the rain can be fun after all.
As an elementary teacher, this is the kind of story that I love reading to my students. The text is hysterical and keeps readers engaged until the end. I love that this can be used as a teaching tool to over go topics such as the Concept of Print, Social and Emotional Learning, and story perspective. I love the Abi enlarged parts of the text to match Bear’s attitude. The illustrations are done with muted colors that perfectly match a gloomy day. The Hulu Hoop stands out as the one bright pop of color and draws the reader’s eyes to it.
This is a fantastic read aloud and one that children are sure to want to hear over and over.
