A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart By Zetta Elliott & Noa Denmon

Back of Book:

Summertime is filled with joy―skateboarding and playing basketballuntil his community is deeply wounded by a police shooting. As fall turns to winter and then spring, fear grows into anger, then pride and peace. Here is a groundbreaking narrative that can help all readers―children and adults alike―talk about the feelings hiding deep inside each of us.

My Review:

I received a copy of this picture book from Macmillian Press in exchange for an honest review.

Debut author Zetta Elliott wrote a beautiful lyrical picture book that follows a young black boy as he expresses his feelings after police shooting shifts his perspective and shatters his community. The text follows the young boy as he expresses his emotions of fear, anger, pride, and finally peace. Each page describes the importance of community and connection. The text is layered and complex. The illustrations by Noa Denmon are whimsical and a perfect blend of color to match the emotions of the young boy.

This is an excellent and emotional read-aloud and can be used to help children express their own feelings about current events.
