“Counting Kindness by Hollis Kurman is an enduring picture book that introduces young audiences to the journey that many refugee children face as they enter the United States. The story follows a young boy and his family as they leave a scary environment for a safer one. During each part of the journey where kindness counts. The text counts from one to ten using each number to express a different way that kindness is shown to refugees. The illustrations by Barroux showcase the journey in a way that young readers can understand and recognize. The back of the book has more information about child refugees including outside resources where readers can find more information.
