Back of Book:
More than half of the world’s refugees are children, with millions of kids fleeing wars, floods, and other scary situations in search of a safe place to live. Arriving in a new place is stressful for both newcomers and their new communities, especially when the newcomers are little ones. But this beautiful counting book captures the joy of finding a home and the power of a welcoming community. From playing to sleeping, eating to reading, celebrating to learning, Counting Kindness proves we can lift the heaviest hearts when we come together.
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from Charlesbridge Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
“Counting Kindness by Hollis Kurman is an enduring picture book that introduces young audiences to the journey that many refugee children face as they enter the United States. The story follows a young boy and his family as they leave a scary environment for a safer one. During each part of the journey where kindness counts. The text counts from one to ten using each number to express a different way that kindness is shown to refugees. The illustrations by Barroux showcase the journey in a way that young readers can understand and recognize. The back of the book has more information about child refugees including outside resources where readers can find more information.
