Apple season is one of my favorite times of the year. In my classroom, it is the official start to my fall unit. Debut author Beth Charles wrote a delightful story that follows a young girl named Sophie and her family as they prepare the apple trees for harvest. Sophie learns each step that a tree goes through to grow apples. The informational text teaches readers about what happens to apple trees in each season of the year. The illustrations by Katie Rewse are a blend of bright colors and natural hues. Katie did a terrific job of bringing the text to life.
The back matter includes a personal note from the author about her own apple orchard, helpful notes on orchard tools, and a recipe for homemade apple pie. “How to Grow an Apple Pie” is the perfect informational story to share in the classroom or at home.
