Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon By Kat Zhang & Illustrated by Charlene Chua

Back of Book:

Amy loves craft time at school. But when her teacher asks everyone to make their own dragon, Amy feels stuck. Her first dragon has a long, wingless body, stag-like horns, and eagle claws, but her friends don’t think it’s a real dragon. Then she makes dragons like theirs, but none of them feels quite right…None of them feels like hers.

After school, a story from Grandma sparks new inspiration, and Amy rounds up her family to help her. Together, can they make Amy’s perfect dragon?

My Review:

I am so excited that author Kat Zhang and illustrator Charlene Chua have teamed up again to create a second Amy Wu adventure. “Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon” follows Amy and her classmates as they explore the different dragons that they see in storybooks. When the class creates their own dragons, Amy’s dragon is long and thin with horns like a stag and claws like an eagle but her friends are sure that isn’t a real dragon. Discouraged, Amy goes home and shares her frustrations with her grandma. To Amy’s surprise, Grandma has stories about many different dragons. and reminds Amy of the large red dragon head that is up in the attic. Using the stories and dragon head as inspiration, and with some help from her family, Amy creates her own special dragon to share in school. Illustrator Charlene Chua again created bright engaging scenes that readers will love including the cuddly kitty that appears on every page. The back of the book has directions on how readers can create their own dragon. This is a lovely story for the classroom or at home.
