Own voice debut author Joanna Ho has created a stunning own voice that showcases a young girl as she celebrates her unique eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea. She realizes that her eyes connect her to her mother and grandmother and the heritage they share. The girl recognizes that her beauty is a unique blend of her past and her present. This realization allows her to feel empowered, and ready to be a role model for her little sister. The text is written in a first-person narrative and allows readers to connect with what the young girl is saying. The phrase eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea is repeated several times which adds a beautiful cadence to the story. The illustrations by Dung Ho are filled with vibrant colors and images! “Eyes that Kiss in the Corners” is the kind of story that should not be missed.
