Back of Book:
It’s Pascha, and Catherine is determined to stay awake all night. Can she do it? Will she remember how to say “Christ is risen!” in Russian? Will her best friend Elizabeth remember how to say it in Greek? Will their parents let them play with burning candles, smash hard-boiled eggs, and eat sweets until the sun rises on Pascha?
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from author Charlotte Riggle as apart of Multicultural Book Day.
“Catherine’s Pascha” by Charlotte Riggle is a lovely diverse story that follows a young girl named Catherine as she celebrates Easter in the Greek Orthodox Church. Catherine is determined to stay awake all night and celebrate Pascha with her friends and family. The church service is held during the middle of the night and filled with a lively vigil of traditional liturgy, prayers, and festivities. Catherine is determined not to miss one second of Pascha, especially the feast at the very end. Catherine enjoys every aspect of the celebration with her best friend Elizabeth, together play with burning candles, smash hard-boiled eggs, and eat sweets until the sun rises The text is written in a first-person narrative and allows readers to experience Pascha from a child’s point of view. The illustrations by R.J. Hughes are beautifully unique. Each page has illustrations of a famous cathedral from around the world in the background, then Catherine’s story is the main focus on each page. The images are full of bright colors and details. The back of the book has a list of the words used throughout the story as well as frequently asked questions. “Catherines Pascha” is a wonderful diverse story about how people from the Orthodox Church celebrate Easter!
