“Laxmi’s Mooch” by own voice author Shelly Anand is a heartwarming story about the importance of having body positivity and self-acceptance.
This story follows a young Indian American girl named Laxmi as she learns to appreciate the mooch that makes her unique. When a classmate tells Laxmi that her little mooch looks like a cat it shakes her confidence. Laxmi’s mom addresses her concern about having mooch/mustache with great ease and positivity. The dialogue between mom and daughter is empowering and makes Laxmi feel confident with her hairy skin. Papa also helps Laxmi by telling her about famous women like Frida Kahlo who also have moochs.
The next day at school, Laxmi goes on to help her diverse group of classmates embrace the power of the mooch. The first-person narrative and allows readers to connect with Laxmi’s feelings and decisions. The illustrations by Nabi H. Ali are filled with bright images and details. I love the way she brought Laxmi’s culture and traditions to life. “Laxmi’s Mooch” is a stunning story that encourages children to celebrate the things that make them unique.
