My Review:

I received a copy of this picture book from Harper Collins Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Paletero Man by Lucky Diaz highlights a wonderful and familiar experience of visiting the ice cream man and getting a delicious and cool treat. I live in Southern California, and enjoyed seeing a piece of my area brought to life.

The story follows a young boy as he walks through the streets of Los Angeles in search of the Paletero Man. Eager to not miss his favorite dessert, the boy runs through the neighborhood. Along the way, he sees several of his friends who all stop to say hello. But nothing will distract him from finding Paletreo Jose. When he finally arrives at the truck, he realizes that he has lost his money along the way. Thankfully, his friends come to the rescue, and everyone gets to enjoy a treat. The first-person narrative of this story allows readers to connect to the young boy and his community. The mix of Spanish and English words showcases the different cultures and traditions that are present in Los Angeles. The illustrations by Micah Player are vibrant and bring the city of dreamers to life. This is a truly wonderful story that captures the excitement of summer days, and of course, ice cream!
