Back of Book:
Welcome, friend. Welcome.
There are almost as many ways of making someone feel welcome as there are people on our planet. To welcome another is to give that person and yourself a chance at a new connection, a new friendship, and maybe even new eyes through which to view the world.
Journey around the globe as A Hundred Thousand Welcomes introduces the word for “welcome” in fourteen languages to illuminate a universal message of hope and acceptance.
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from Green Willow Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
A Hundred Thousand Welcomes by Mary Lee Donovan is the type of story that the world needs to hear. The story focuses on the importance of welcoming strangers into our community. Each page focuses on a different area and the language in which they use to say welcome. The lyrical text has rhyming stanzas that describe the beauty of diversity using examples of food, songs, and traditions. The illustrations by Lian Cho capture the different cultures, and customs in a realistic, and beautiful way.
The words in languages other than English are handwritten and large for younger children to try to pronounce.
The back matter has notes from the author and illustrator as well as a final note about pronunciation.
This is a moving book that showcases the importance of friendship and acceptance.
