A Vote Is a Powerful Thing By Catherine Stier & Courtney Dawson

Back of Book:
Callie knows there’s a presidential election coming up. Her class is having an election, too, about an issue that affects them all – the class field trip! She’s about to witness first-hand what a difference a vote can make – even a single vote – and along the way will find out about the election process and why people have fought for the right to vote throughout history. A great kids-eye look at the power of the vote.
My Review:
I received a copy of this picture book from Albert Whitman Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Election day is right around the corner and I always take time to find picture books that explain the election process in a way that readers can understand and relate to. “A Vote is a Powerful Thing” by Catherine Stier follows a young girl named Callie as she and her class learn about the election process. The class has a choice between two different field trips they can either go to the cookie factory or the wilderness park. Callie volunteers to campaign for the wilderness park. She designs posters and even writes a speech. The text is written in a first-person narrative and allows readers to connect with Callie and her mission. The illustrations by Courtney Dawson are bright and cheerful, they also showcase a diverse group of students. The back of the book has a section all about voting that gives readers extra facts about the history of voting in the United States.
This is a perfect addition to any lesson or unit about voting and the election process.
